Tesla has earned another bragging point to bring up down at the pub as the Model X has taken a 5 star safety rating in every category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over in the States.

The NHTSA's safety tests involves a frontal crash between two vehicles, as well as various side crashes. It also tests how easy it is for a vehicle to roll. The tests assess not only the structure of the vehicle, but also the seatbelts and airbags.

Much to Tesla - and Tesla owners' - delight, the Model X earned a perfect score in all 11 categories, becoming the first SUV to ever pull that off, and second of all the cars the NHTSA have tested only to the Model S.

In the event of a major crash, Model X occupants have a 93% chance of walking away without a serious injury. In the event of a rollover - well, there won't be one. The NHTSA testers couldn't get the Model X to roll at all.

Tesla say this performance in a crash scenario is due to its "all-electric architecture and powertrain design. The rigid, fortified battery pack that powers Model X is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle creating a center of gravity so low that Model X has the lowest rollover probability of any SUV on the road."

"No other SUV has ever come close to meeting and exceeding this rollover requirement."
